The Lanna Style Funeral for Phra Thepwisutthikhun (Kusol Khanthawaro)
We recently had a chance to see preparations for a funeral of a very revered monk in Chiang Mai at Wat Suandok. Phra Thepwisutthikhun (Kusol Khanthawaro) had passed away last year at 91 years old. He had been a monk for over 70 years. Lanna funerals for monks are elaborate ceremonies, and because Phra Thepwisutthikhun (Kusol Khanthawaro) was from a Royal bloodline, we knew it would be spectacular. His body had been preserved for almost a year, awaiting the time when it would be placed on a pavilion above a Hussadeeling sculpture for three days before it’s cremation ignited by a Royal Fire on a Royal temple’s grounds.
เนื่องด้วยเมื่อเร็วๆนี้ ได้มีโอกาสไปสักการะศพพระเทพวิสุทธิคุณ (กุศล คนฺธวโร) อดีตที่ปรึกษาเจ้าคณะจังหวัดเชียงใหม่, อดีตเจ้าคณะจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ และอดีตเจ้าอาวาสวัดบุพพาราม อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ซึ่งมรณภาพไปเมื่อวันที่ ๖ เมษายน พ.ศ.๒๕๕๙ สิริรวมอายุได้ ๙๐ ปี ๕ เดือน พรรษา ๗๐ และประกอบพิธีพระราชทานเพลิงศพไปแล้วเมื่อวันที่ ๒๘ มกราคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๖๐ —– ในบล็อกนี้ของ 180books.org จึงได้รวบรวมข้อมูลเล็กน้อยเกี่ยวกับงานศพของพระสงฆ์ตามประเพณีล้านนามาเล่าสู่กันฟัง
ตามประเพณีล้านนานั้น หากพระสงฆ์ถึงแก่มรณภาพ ก็จะจัดงานใหญ่กว่าบุคคลธรรมดาสามัญและสมควรแก่ฐานันดรศักดิ์ เสมือนว่าท่านนั้นเกิดมาเพื่อสร้างบุญบารมีและกลับไปสู่ภพภูมิที่สูงขึ้นไป โดยมีการจัดทำปราสาทและพิธีกรรมทางศาสนาโดยให้เป็นไปตามระบบชนชั้นในล้านนาอันประกอบด้วยชนชั้นเจ้านาย, บุคคลสามัญชนทั่วไป และพระภิกษุสามเณร … โดยเฉพาะงานศพของเจ้านายและพระสงฆ์ ดังนั้นงานพระราชทานเพลิงศพของหลวงพ่อกุศล ผู้เป็นพระสงฆ์ทรงสมณศักดิ์ พระเถราจารย์ชั้นผู้ใหญ่แห่งล้านนา อีกทั้งมารดาของท่านคือ เจ้าแม่หอมนวล ณ น่าน เป็นชนชั้นมูลนาย จึงมีการสร้างปราสาทหลังกูบแล้วเชิญหีบศพขึ้นไว้ในบุษบกบนหลังนกหัสดีลิงค์ รวมทั้งมีพิธีออกเมรุงานพระราชทานเพลิงศพ ณ เมรุชั่วคราว วัดสวนดอกพระอารามหลวง ตามประเพณีที่จะไม่ใช้ฌาปนสถานร่วมกับฆราวาสทั่วไป

Hussadeeling – หัสดีลิงค์
How did the mythological half-bird, half-elephant known as a Hussadeeling become associated with Monks and Royal funerals in Lanna culture? Well, that’s a long story, dealing with Mt. Meru, which is a symbol of the Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain universe. The Hussadeeling lives at the foot of Mt. Meru in the Himvanta Forest, and it alone possesses the strength and grace to carry the soul of the deceased across the lakes and mountains to the border of the heavens. Although the animal cannot enter the heavens, the merit that the soul of a person accumulated in his lifetime will allow him to ascend further into the heavens.
At the time of cremation, flames engulf the entire sculpture, pavilion, and monk’s body, as a final send-off. Fon wasn’t able to get close enough for a video of the cremation, but here’s a link to view a video courtesy of Watpansao Chiangmai.

หัสดีลิงค์เป็นหนึ่งในบรรดาสัตว์ป่าหิมพานต์ซึ่งอยู่บนเชิงเขาพระสุเมรุ (หิมาลัย) มีลักษณะช่วงตัว, ปีก, หาง และขาเป็นนก มีส่วนหัว, งวง และงาเหมือนช้าง มีลำตัวกว้างใหญ่และมีพละกำลังมากเท่าช้างสาร ๕ เชือก และมีเสียงร้องที่ได้ยินแล้ววังเวงใจยิ่งนัก … หากทว่าชาวล้านนารับเอาความเชื่อเรื่องเขาพระสุเมรุในทางพุทธศาสนามาเช่นเดียวกับชาวไทยในภาคอื่นๆ จึงสร้างบุษบกปราสาทเปรียบเป็นเขาพระสุเมรุศูนย์กลางแห่งจักรวาล ที่มียอดสูงสุดเป็นสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์ บริเวณรอบๆ ตีนเขาพระสุเมรุซึ่งเป็นป่าหิมพานต์ (หิมาลัย) อันเป็นที่อยู่ของสัตว์นานาชนิดรวมทั้งนกหัสดีลิงค์ผู้มีพละกำลังมาก จะสามารถเป็นพาหนะนำพาข้ามป่าเขาและมหานทีสีทันดร จากนั้นจะเป็นเขตแดนสวรรค์ซึ่งนกหัสดีลิงค์ไม่สามารถเข้าสู่ดินแดนนั้นได้
ดังนั้น งานศพพระเถระในล้านนามักจะได้รับความสนใจจากชาวล้านนาเป็นพิเศษ เพราะการมาร่วมงานศพพระเถระนั้นเป็นงานบุญซึ่งได้อานิสงส์ผลบุญมาก มีประชาชนและผู้ที่เคารพนับถือมาร่วมงานอย่างล้นหลาม ตลอดจนถึงผู้มีจิตศรัทธาตั้งโรงทานแจกน้ำดื่มและอาหารแก่ผู้มาร่วมงานตลอดทั้งวัน ทั้งนี้ในการประชุมเพลิงงานศพพระเถระ จะทำการเผาทั้งปราสาทและนกหัสดีลิงค์ ณ บริเวณภายในวัดนั้นเลย เนื่องจากไม่สามารถเข้าไปถ่ายวิดีโอใกล้ๆ ได้เพราะทั้งน้ำและควัน ดังนั้นจึงนำคลิปจากยูทูปของวัดปันเสามาแปะไว้ให้ชมแทนนะคะ

Wat Suandok – วัดสวนดอก พระอารามหลวง
Wat Suandok, located in Chiang Mai, Thailand, is a royal temple built in the reign of King Kue Na of the Lanna empire in the year 1370 CE. The name of the temple means “flower garden temple” because it was built in King Kue Na’s flower garden. Although King Kue Na named this temple Wat Buppharam, local people call it “Wat Suandok” for short and because it’s easier to remember.
สำหรับวัดสวนดอก เป็นพระอารามหลวง ชั้นตรี ชนิดสามัญ ตั้งอยู่ถนนสุเทพ ตำบลสุเทพ อำเภอเมืองเชียงใหม่ จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ โดยพระเจ้ากือนาธรรมิกราช กษัตริย์ลำดับที่ ๖ แห่งราชวงศ์มังราย อาณาจักรล้านนา ทรงพระราชทานอุทยาน “สวนดอกไม้พะยอม” เป็นที่สร้างวัดพร้อมกับพระราชทานนามวัดนี้ว่า “วัดบุปผาราม” หมายถึง วัดแห่งสวนดอกไม้ ซึ่งเป็นที่รู้จักกันในนามว่า “วัดสวนดอก” —– และก็เป็นที่มาของบล็อกอีกบล็อกหนึ่งของเราที่ไปซ่อมตัวอักษร “D” ที่หลุดหายไปจากป้ายหน้าวัดสวนดอก พอมองดูป้ายหน้าวัดแล้วก็กลายเป็นวัดสวน-โอเค (WAT SUAN _OK) ไปซะ เลยถือโอกาสซ่อมให้เรียบร้อยค่ะ
