A Meeting with the Infamous Aghoras- महाशिवरात्रि – อโฆรี (อโฆร) เมืองพาราณสี
My wife, who planned our trips to India carefully, Made sure we were in the Holy city of Varanasi for Maha Shivaratri, the annual Hindu festival dedicated to the God Shiva. We were walking along the Ganges River making photos when a strange looking naked man stood in front of me. He brought one leg up behind his head in a pose that only an accomplished yogi could master and stared straight through me. He was covered in ashes, had matted-down hair, and the wildest look in his eyes imaginable. I can’t post that photo here, but in this photo, he is seated and censored by the beads.
Who are the Aghoras or Aghoris? Why do they look so scary? Are they monks, priests, sadhus, yogis, rishis, tribal people,… ??? Some of you may have seen or read that they consume dead human bodies, use a human skull as a bowl, blah blah blah’… Travel blogs seem to want to sensationalize them and their practices. I want to dig deeper and learn more about them. I’ve set about looking for friends of friends in India that can tell me more and will update this blog as soon as I get more information.
“อโฆร (Aghora)” หรือ “อโฆรี (Aghori)” คือใคร? ทำไมดูน่ากลัว! ..เป็นนักบวช, สาธุ, โยคี, ฤษี, ชีเปลือย, หรือชนเผ่า… หลายท่านคงเคยเห็นบทความและเว็บภาษาไทยที่กล่าวถึงพวกเขาว่าเป็นชนเผ่ากินเนื้อคนบ้าง, กินศพมนุษย์บ้าง, ใช้กะโหลกมนุษย์เป็นถ้วยชามบ้าง, บลาๆๆๆๆ — เดี๋ยวจะเล่าให้ฟังในบล็อกนี้เลยว่า พวกเขาคือใคร.

Many people believe they are backward, scary looking, and disgusting BUT we found they are interesting and have already learned from them. There is a method to their apparent madness. They believe that the God Shiva is in their soul, but living in the worldliness of society has blocked them from remembering this truth. So the Aghoris follow the pathway of Lord Shiva manifested as Bhairava,
ในขณะที่หลายคนมองว่า พวกเขางมงาย ล้าหลัง น่ากลัว น่ารังเกียจ แต่พอเราศึกษาลึกลงไปพบว่า “อโฆรี (Aghori) เป็นกลุ่มผู้นับถือพระศิวะแบบสุดโต่งกลุ่มหนึ่งในนิกายตันตระ นาม “พระไภรวะ” บางคนคงคุ้นหูกันบ้าง คือเป็นพระนามหนึ่งของพระศิวะ อันมีที่มาจากด้านที่น่าสะพรึงกลัวของพระศิวะ และอีกนามหนึ่งคือ พระภูเตศวร ซึ่งพระศิวะทรงปฏิบัติตันตระโยคะ อยู่บริเวณที่วิเวกเช่น สุสาน หรือ บริเวณที่เผาศพ, เปลือยกายและทาตัวด้วยเถ้าจากการเผาศพ, มีมุ่นผมอันรุงรัง และมีภูตผีเป็นบริวาร ตัดโลกภายนอก เหล่าอโฆรีจึงประพฤติวัตรตามอย่างพระศิวะนั่นเอง — แต่ก็มีบางช่วงบางตอนที่อโฆรีนอกบทนอกตอนออกไปแบบสุดโต่งเหมือนกัน คือประมาณว่าไม่ได้ทำเพื่อความเพลิดเพลินแต่มันเป็นบททดสอบที่เหล่ากูรูทำการทดสอบพวกเขาก่อนจะรับเป็นศิษย์และเป็นอโฆรี เช่น ทานเนื้อจากศพ, ทานมูตรคูถ, เสพสมกับศพ เป็นต้น กิจวัตรหลักของอโฆรีไม่ใช่สามอย่างที่กล่าวถึงเมื่อครู่ หากคือ การสวดมนฺตรา ประกอบพิธีกรรม และตันตระโยคะเพื่อหนทางสู่โมกษะ โดยบางอย่างอาจจะดูไม่ดีในทางโลก แต่มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อให้ตนผุดผ่องจากความโสมมหรือบาปในสังสารวัฏ ไม่ให้ตนรู้สึกรัก-โลภ-โกรธ-หลงใดๆ ทั้งสิ้น
ปกติเราจะไม่ได้มีโอกาสเห็นเหล่าอโฆรีได้ง่ายนักนะคะ พวกเขามักปลีกวิเวกและจะมาปรากฏตัวร่วมพิธีศักดิ์สิทธิ์เท่านั้น เช่น กุมภเมลา และ ศิวะราตรี เป็นต้น ***เราขออนุญาตพวกเขาถ่ายภาพขณะที่ไปร่วมงาน มหาศิวะราตรี ณ เมืองพาราณสี*** หลายคนหวาดกลัวอโฆรีเพราะเชื่อว่ามีเวทย์มนต์คาถา บางคนเชื่อว่าอโฆรีสามารถรักษาความเจ็บป่วยบางอย่างให้ตนหายได้ ในขณะเดียวกันคนที่อาศัยในเขตเมืองหลายเมืองพยายามผลักดันอโฆรีออกไปจากชุมชนเพราะความไม่เจริญหูเจริญตาและสาเหตุอื่น จะว่าไปเราก็เข้าใจได้ไม่ยากค่ะว่าทำไมสังคมปัจจุบันไม่ยอมรับเพราะนอกจากรูปลักษณ์ของอโฆรีที่ทาตัวด้วยเถ้า ไม่สวมเสื้อผ้าอาภรณ์ สวมแต่สร้อยรุทรักษะแล้ว อโฆรีบางท่านยังถือตรีศูลและกะโหลกศีรษะมนุษย์อีกด้วย — อีกคำถามนึงเกิดขึ้นแล้ว ในภาพพระศิวะ ก็มีกะโหลก แต่มันคือกะโหลกใคร — ตอบ กะโหลกศีรษะของพระพรหม เมื่อครั้งมี ๕ เศียร แล้วถูกพระศิวะตัดเศียรจึงมี ๔ เศียรดังที่เราเห็นกัน ((เรื่องมันยาวไว้เล่าในบล็อกอื่นนะคะ))

In fact, they believe that eight bonds prevent them from the liberation that would come from recollection of this knowledge, namely: Hate, shame, fear, doubt, reproach, status (caste), greed, and modesty. For example, living in a cemetery destroys fear; Nakedness destroys modesty;, etc. Through their lifestyle, they eventually achieve their goal after breaking these bonds.
คำว่า “อโฆร” แปลว่า น่ากลัว ฝนก็กลัวๆ กล้าๆ เหมือนกันค่ะ แต่เอายิ้มเข้าสู้ บวกกับเคารพนอบน้อม … เป้าหมายของ อโฆรี คือ การหลุดพ้นจากสังสารวัฏ หรือ โมกษะ หรือ นิพพานนั่นเอง
จึงมีข้อปฏิบัติเพื่อให้ตัวเองปล่อยวางเพื่อเข้าสู่ทางหลุดพ้นจากกิเลส, โลกีย์ และอาสวะทั้งปวง เช่น
– ละวิถีคฤหัสถ์ปลีกวิเวกไปแสวงหาความรู้แจ้งสัจธรรมและบำเพ็ญภาวนาสมาธิฌาน
– ตัดโลกียวิสัย ไม่มีเพศสัมพันธ์ตลอดชีวิต อีกทั้งหลายท่านยังพยายามตัดตัณหาด้วยการทรมานตัวเองต่างๆ นานา
– ละชนชั้นวรรณะและธุระทางโลกซึ่งเป็นมายาครอบงำแห่งโลกวัตถุนิยม อันกระตุ้นให้เกิดราคะ, โทสะ, โมหะ, โลภะ ที่พวกเขาต้องดับให้หมดไป
– อโฆรีอาศัยอยู่ในบริเวณสุสานและสถานที่เผาศพ ก็เพื่อขจัดความกลัว
– ทาร่างกายด้วยเถ้า แทนการสวมเสื้อผ้าอาภรณ์ เพื่อขจัดอัตตา
– เปลือยกาย เพื่อขจัดความอาย

– เสพกัญชาและพืชที่ออกฤทธิ์กับระบบประสาทให้อยู่ในสภาวะเคลิ้ม เพื่อให้จิตจดจ่อกับวัตรที่ตนกำลังประกอบอยู่ และในขณะเดียวกันก็สามารถควบคุมจิตให้นิ่งและตื่นรู้อยู่ตลอดเวลา ไม่ใช่เสพเพื่อความสุขหรือความเพลิดเพลินเริงรมย์ในทางโลก
– ปฏิบัติตันตระโยคะ เพื่อช่วยควบคุมและตามทันอารมณ์ของตน อีกทั้งช่วยให้จิตกับกายหลอมเป็นหนึ่งเดียวเข้าไปสู่ะอาตมัน เป็นต้น
สิ่งหนึ่งที่เราตระหนักและเรียนรู้จากอโฆรี คือ การมีวินัยในตัวเอง (self-discipline) อย่างมากถึงมากที่สุด ไม่มีใครมาบังคับหรือควบคุม และถ้าเราไร้วินัยเมื่อไหร่ โอกาสที่จะประสบความสำเร็จก็ริบหลี่เหลือเกิน โดยเฉพาะกระแสโลกวัตถุนิยมในปัจจุบันช่างเป็นมายาอันแกร่งกล้าท้าทายยิ่งนัก.
