Jai Shri Ram!: Ram Navami ~ जय श्री राम: श्री रामनवमी ~ ใจ ศรีราม!: วันรามาวตาร
To celebrate the birth of Lord Rama or Shri Ram who was the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, we’d like to share some of our photos from our travels around India. Rama was the hero of the Ramayana (रामायणम्), an ancient epic poem of India that was composed by the Hindu sage Valmiki. This epic poem was translated from Sanskrit into many languages, especially in Southeast Asia where they were exposed to the Indian culture by way of the Maritime Silk Road or Spice Route.
วันรามาวตาร หรือ วันคล้ายวันประสูติของพระราม จากมหากาพย์รามายณะหรือที่คนไทยรู้จักกันในชื่อ รามเกียรติ์ วรรณคดีที่มีอิทธิพลอย่างมากในด้านศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมไทย มหากาพย์รามายณะ (रामायणम्) รวบรวมและประพันธ์โศลกเป็นภาษสันสกฤตโดยฤๅษีวาลมีกิ เป็นมหากาพย์ที่ยิ่งใหญ่ฉบับหนึ่งของอินเดียและเป็นหนึ่งในวรรณคดีโบราณที่ยาวที่สุดในโลก ได้รับการแปลเป็นภาษาต่างๆ ไปทั่วอินเดียตลอดจนภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ก็ได้รับอิทธิพลจากอารยธรรมอินเดียผ่านเส้นทางสายเครื่องเทศ (spice route) เกิดเป็นสายสัมพันธ์ทางศิลปวัฒนธรรม

Who is Ram? – พระราม คือใคร?
The epic poem, describes the royal birth of Shri Ram to King Dasharatha of Ayodhya kingdom, his studies under the sage Vishvamitra, and his success in bending Shiva’s mighty bow at the bridegroom tournament to win the hand of Sita in marriage. At 24,000 verses it is one of the longest epics of ancient literature. I had been meaning to read to read this epic but was daunted by the task. Fortunately, I discovered R.K. Narayan’s version in the form of a 192-page book. This is one of those classic stories that I’ve enjoyed reading over and over again. Like the Mahabharata, it seems that I find new meanings to the story as I read it at different points in my life.
พระราม เป็นองค์อวตารปางที่ ๗ ของพระวิษณุหรือพระนารายณ์ อวตารมาเป็นโอรสท้าวทศรถแห่งเมืองอโยธยา มีฤษีวิศวามิตรเป็นผู้ประสิทธิ์ประสาทวิชาธนู, ศีลธรรม, ตลอดจนศิลปวิทยาต่างๆ และพระรามสามารถยกศรได้สำเร็จและอภิเษกสมรสกับสิตา (นางสีดา)
Ramayana – รามายณะ
The Ramayana depicts the duties of relationships, and many of the characters portray ideal qualities such as the ideal father, the ideal brother, the ideal wife and the ideal king. Sri Ram is referred to the Perfect Man or Lord of Self-Control or Lord of Virtue.
รามายณะ สื่อให้ตระหนักถึงหน้าที่และความจงรักภักดี พรรณนาให้เห็นถึงบทบาทของบุคคลในอุดมคติ เช่น พ่อ-แม่, พี่-น้อง, สามี-ภรรยา, และพระมหากษัตริย์ ซึ่งพระรามนั้นนับได้ว่าบุรุษที่สมบูรณ์แบบ เป็นเทพบุตรผู้รู้จักควบคุมตนเองเป็นเลิศ และเป็นราชาแห่งคุณธรรม

Shri Ram was exiled from his kingdom, his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana decided to join him, and they all spent their journey in the forest in India as ascetics for 14 years. While in his exile, Sita was kidnapped by the demon king of Lanka named Ravana. Rama and Lakshmana began a desperate search for Sita, with the help of the divine monkey army which was led by Sugriva. Sugriva’s minister, Hanuman who is an ardent devotee of Lord Rama was the first to reach Lanka and found Sita. A war was then waged by Ram, an army of monkeys, and bears against the evil demons to free her.
เมื่อครั้งพระรามถูกเนรเทศจากเมืองอโยธยาเป็นเวลา ๑๔ ปี สิตาและลักษมัณ (พระลักษมณ์) เสด็จตามพระรามไปด้วย ช่วงท้ายแห่งการถูกเนรเทศ สิตาถูกราวัณหรือราวณะ (ทศกัณฐ์) ลักพาไปยังกรุงลงกา พระรามและลักษมัณออกตามหาสิตาจนได้พบกับสุครีวะ (สุครีพ) และหนุมาน ผู้เป็นมหามนตรีของสุครีวะ อีกทั้งหนุมานยังเป็นผู้ที่มีศรัทธาและภักดีแรงกล้าต่อพระราม แม้หนุมานเป็นผู้มีฤทธิ์เดชมากแต่ก็มีวิชาความรู้และความเฉลียวฉลาดมากเช่นกัน หนุมานจึงเป็นผู้เดียวที่สามารถข้ามมหาสมุทรไปยังกรุงลงกาจนพบสิตาและกลับมาช่วยนำทัพของพระรามสู่กรุงลงกา มหาสงครามจบลงที่พระรามผู้เป็นราชาแห่งคุณธรรมชนะราวัณฝ่ายอธรรมในที่สุด

After Shri Ram had completed his 14-year exile, he returned to Ayodhya and became the king. He ruled with happiness, peace, duty, prosperity, and justice during a period known as Rama Rajya. If you are interested in seeing a TV adaptation of this epic, Sagar’s version is highly recommended. This is a soap opera type drama which I usually cringe at the though of watching, but after watching this series MANY times we both find it very thought provoking and endlessly discuss its meaning and sometimes act out our favorite parts.

When is Ram Navami? – วันรามาวตาร ตรงกับวันไหน?
Ram Navami is celebrated on the ninth day of Chaitra month which is the first month of the Hindu lunar calendar. It marks the peak of the spring festival of Vasanta Navratri or Chaitra Navratri which is in late between March and April. It is celebrated by the faithful with devotional worship such as listening to songs and stories about Rama’s life, and by fasting. Some areas in India have grand chariot processions called Rath-yatras and temples organize special discussion sessions in the evening. Followers of ISKCON fast through the daylight hours. The result is the book, THAILAND 180º. Later, they traveled extensively through Myanmar, Malaysia, and India, gathering a massive collection of 180º photos. They currently live in Chiang Mai where they continue to blog and are now working on a CHIANG MAI 180º book.
