The Incredible Wax Castle Festival in Sakon Nakhon (งานประเพณีแห่ปราสาทผึ้ง)
The Wax Castle Festival, deep in Isaan’s Sakon Nakhon Province, is another festival that is Not-To-Be-Missed! At one time in the past, this festival was celebrated by attaching molded wax flowers, to the trunk of a banana tree and carrying it to a temple as an offering. Over the years, this festival morphed into the spectacle that it is today, with huge castles made from wax atop floats, beauty queens and contests.
งานประเพณีแห่ปราสาทผึ้ง จังหวัดสกลนคร เป็นอีกงานหนึ่งที่พลาดไม่ได้ ในอดีตของการทำต้นผึ้งโบราณใช้กาบกล้วยทำเป็นโครงแล้วนำดอกผึ้งซึ่งชาวบ้านจะนำขึ้ผึ้งสีต่างๆ ใส่ถ้วยหรือขันลงลอยในน้ำร้อนที่ตั้งไฟอ่อนๆ ให้ขี้ผึ้งละลาย แล้วใช้มะละกอดิบที่ปอกเปลือกตัดแต่งก้นให้เว้าคล้ายดอกไม้เป็นแม่แบบ จุ่มลงในขี้ผึ้งที่ละลายแล้วและจุ่มลงในน้ำเย็น ก็จะได้เป็นดอกผึ้งแล้วนำมาประกอบเข้ากับดอกบานไม่รู้โรยที่ดูเหมือนเกสรดอกไม้มาประดับตกแต่งปราสาท จากนั้นมาก็ได้มีการพัฒนาเรื่อยมาจนมีทั้งปราสาททรงพระธาตุ, ปราสาทผึ้งทรงหอผี, ปราสาทผึ้งทรงบุษบก, ปราสาทผึ้งทรงจตุรมุข ไปจนถึงนางฟ้าปราสาทผึ้งและการประกวดแข่งขันต่างๆ อันอลังการอย่างที่เห็นในวันนี้

The night before the parade is lots of fun. One-by-one, the floats arrived to a large parking lot, where the finishing touches were made and the tops were attached using cranes. The atmosphere was very festive and no one seemed to mind waiting in queue for the crane. Food and vendors of every kind filed in and set-up their stands and after the sun set and the moon rose (Full moon of course, as are most Thai and Buddhist celebrations.) color lights were added to the floats, completing the display.
คืนก่อนวันแห่ปราสาทผึ้งนั้นสนุกตื่นเต้นมาก เราไปรอกันที่สนามมิ่งเมืองซึ่งชาวคุ้มต่างๆ จะเริ่มทยอยนำปราสาทผึ้งที่ตบแต่งสวยงามมาประกวดอวดโฉมกัน ภาพด้านบนนี้เขากำลังใช้เครนช่วยให้คนขึ้นไปประกอบปราสาทผึ้งโบราณและประดับไฟหลากสี ซึ่งเครนก็มีไม่กี่ตัว ต้องเข้าคิวกันไปอย่างเป็นระเบียบเรียบร้อย ร้านค้าต่างๆ ก็เริ่มตั้งร้านกันช่วงตะวันคล้อยต่ำ และช่วงพลบค่ำแบบนี้พอเขาเปิดไฟประดับสีสันสวยงามเราก็รีบเข้าไปเก็บภาพทันที (ด้านล่าง)

The next day was the parade, and my wife began pushing my wheelchair for miles, until we found a good vantage point to photograph the parade from.

It was a beautiful day, and I forgot my pain as I barked commands to my patient wife. “Move closer!–Pull Back!!–Not so Fast!!–Get those people outta the WAY!” As the large floats moved down the street, teams of men with long sticks, raised the electric wires to make way for the tall floats. As the sun set, the lights on the floats became visible and gave them new life.
เป็นวันที่สวยงามวันหนึ่ง จนคุณเอ็ดลืมความเจ็บปวดไปชั่วขณะ เพราะคุณเอ็ดสั่งให้เข็นรถไป-มาตลอดเลย — “เข็นรถเข้าไปใกล้ๆ อีกหน่อย!” — “ถอยออกมาหน่อย!” — “อย่าเข็นเร็วนักสิ!” พร้อมกับต้องคอยกันคนให้ออกนอกมุมองศาของเลนส์ด้วย พอขบวนเคลื่อนก็จะมีทีมงานถือไม้ยาวๆ เดินประกบตามมาด้านข้างด้วยเพื่อคอยยกสายไฟฟ้าบนถนนให้พ้นยอดปราสาทผึ้งที่มียอดสูงรอดผ่านไป … ช่วงโพล้เพล้แบบนี้แหละกำลังสวยเลย (บางคนอาจเคยเห็นแต่ปราสาทผึ้งบนฉากหลังที่มีท้องฟ้าดำมืด) จัดไปแบบรัวๆ

When the parade was drawing to a close, we decided to try and go to the display grounds at Phrathat Choeng Chum, hoping for a few more shots. Fon, was really pushing my wheelchair at a fast pace as we raced, but the cracks in the road that almost catapulted me out of the chair several times, caused us to slow down. When we finally arrived at the temple, we were disappointed to find that the tops of the floats had been removed and most of the crowd had dispersed. All-in-all, quite an adventure with many good photos and priceless memories.
This year the festival runs from October 2~5, 2017!
พอช่วงปลายขบวนเคลื่อนผ่านไป เราก็ตัดสินใจออกจากจุดนี้ไปดักรอที่พระธาตุเชิงชุมอันเป็นจุดหมายปลายทางของขบวนพาเหรด พยายามเข็นรถวีลแชร์แข่งกับเวลาออกมาจากพื้นที่เพื่อไปขึ้นรถของเรา แต่ถนนมันเป็นเนินและไม่เรียบ มีรอยต่อจนสะดุดซะจะคุณเอ็ดเกือบกระเด็นลงมาจากวีลแชร์หลายครั้ง ต้องขออภัยด้วยนะคะ .. รีบขึ้นรถ รถก็ติดมาก หาทางลัดเลาะไปเรื่อยๆ แต่พอเรามาถึงบริเวณวัดพระธาตุเชิงชุมก็ต้องผิดหวัง เพราะเขาถอดยอดของปราสาทผึ้งออกหมดเลย! … ซึ่งเรื่องราวความตื่นเต้น ความสวยงาม และภาพถ่ายทั้งหมดนี้เป็นความทรงจำที่หาค่าเปรียบมิได้จริงๆ

The result is the book, THAILAND 180º. Later, they traveled extensively through Myanmar, Malaysia, and India, gathering a massive collection of 180º photos. They currently live in Chiang Mai where they continue to blog and are now working on a CHIANG MAI 180º book.
