The Surprise Book Cover: THAILAND 180º
The Amazing Surin Elephant Round-up was one of the most difficult events that I’ve ever photographed, and we had no idea that we would capture an image for our book cover during this photoshoot. The mahouts and people of Surin have a great sense of pride as their hometown has earned the moniker, “Elephant City” and they put on an impressive show.
I couldn’t imagine what kind of photos I could make since I would have to get very close to the elephants to capture an image with my fisheye lens. Oh, and by the way, I love elephants, but I’m terrified of them. Imagine hundreds of pachyderms gathered at a soccer field including the elephants that are reenacting battles from the older times when Thailand was known as Siam and wars were waged by soldiers atop these mammoth creatures. There’s also an elephant buffet that thousands of elephants from Surin travel to in order to participate, some lucky elephants even get to hitch a ride on a 10-wheel truck.
“มหัศจรรย์งานช้างสุรินทร์” แทบจะเรียกได้ว่าเป็นการถ่ายภาพที่ยากที่สุดของการทำหนังสือเล่มนี้เลยก็ว่า ได้ ตอนนั้นก็ยังไม่รู้เลยว่าภาพนี้จะได้มาเป็นภาพปกหนังสือ THAILAND 180º
ส่วนใหญ่นักท่องเที่ยวต่างชาติชื่นชอบและตื่นเต้นกับงานช้างสุรินทร์มาก คุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดก็เช่นกัน งานช้างสุรินทร์นี้เป็นงานที่พลาดไม่ได้ในการทำหนังสือ THAILAND 180º ซึ่งเราก็วางแผนเดินทางไว้ล่วงหน้ามาหลายเดือน .. ตอนนั้นคุณเอ็ดบอกว่านึกภาพไม่ออกเหมือนกันว่าภาพจะออกมาเป็นยังไง แล้วช้างเหล่านั้นจะมีปฏิกิริยาตอบโต้อย่างไรหากเราเข้าไปถ่ายใกล้ๆ เพราะคอนเซ็ปต์ของเราคือถ่ายภาพด้วยเลนส์ Circular Fisheye …. ลองนึกภาพช้างหลายร้อยเชือกมารวมกันในบริเวณสนามฟุตบอล รวมทั้งช้างที่กำลังซ้อมแสดงเหตุการณ์จำลองการสู้รบในอดีต หรืออีกกิจกรรมหนึ่งที่เรียกความสนใจจากนักท่องเที่ยวเป็นอย่างมาก ก็คือ การเลี้ยงบุฟเฟ่ต์แก่ช้างอีกเป็นพันเชือกที่เดินทางมาจากทั่วจังหวัดสุรินทร์
Expectations Meet Reality…
We arrived early in the morning and began scouting locations. We walked along dirt roads scattered with large bricks of dung until we, at last, arrived backstage at the showgrounds. Luckily, the security guards allowed us in. It was very frustrating for the first hour, and it was hot, very hot. We chased and photographed elephants and their riders as they arrived, but the backgrounds were cluttered, and the elephants seemed agitated. They were, after all, preparing for their yearly time in the limelight, and nervous!
เราเดินทางมาสำรวจจุดต่างๆ รวมถึงสถานที่ซ้อมการแสดงกันแต่เช้า เดินไปตามทางลูกรังที่เต็มไปด้วยขี้ช้างก้อนใหญ่หลายก้อน .. “เห็นช้างขี้ ขี้ตามช้าง” .. ไม่ใช่ค่ะ! เดินตามขี้ช้างไปเรื่อยๆ จนมาถึงด้านหลังพื้นที่การแสดง ((ต้องขออนุญาตเจ้าหน้าที่เข้าไปนะคะ)) ช่วงแรกๆ ก็กระวนกระวายใจอยู่ไม่น้อยว่าจะได้ภาพแบบไหน และอากาศก็ร้อนอบอ้าวมากๆ พอโขลงช้างเริ่มทยอยเข้ามาด้านหลังพื้นที่การแสดงก็เดินตามไปถ่ายภาพ แต่วิวด้านหลังไม่สวยเลย และช้างเหล่านี้มีงายาวเกือบทุกตัว ซึ่งตอนนี้ก็ดูจะตื่นเต้นมากด้วย เราก็กลัวๆ กล้าๆ เหมือนกันน๊าาา ใจไม่ค่อยดี เริ่มคิดแล้วว่าคงไม่สามารถเก็บภาพสวยๆ ดีๆ ได้ซักภาพแน่ เพราะนี่ก็ใกล้ถึงเวลาเริ่มซ้อมใหญ่แล้ว

It’s Showtime!
As showtime for the dressed rehearsal drew closer, I started to think that I would not be able to make a reasonably good picture. That’s when the star elephants began strolling in. They were well trained and mannered and looked confident. Although the show had already started, as the star elephants were changing into their costumes, with the help of the mahouts, they allowed me to make several quick images of them. One of the elephants raised its trunk to pose; I moved in slowly until I was right underneath its giant trunk. I squeezed off six shots on the way in and as calmly as I could back away. …และแล้ว… ดาราช้างกลุ่มหนึ่งก็เดินเข้ามาอย่างสง่าภาคภูมิ พวกมันสงบเสงี่ยม ดูมั่นใจมากเหมือนได้รับการฝึกมาอย่างดี ควานช้างแต่งองค์ทรงเครื่องให้ช้างเหล่านี้เรียบร้อย เลยโพสต์ท่าให้ถ่ายภาพอย่างรวดเร็ว คุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดก็เข้าไปซะใกล้แทบจะใต้งวงช้าง จนต้องถอยออกมาก้าวนึงขณะที่ช้างตัวนั้นกำลังชูงวงขึ้น แล้วก็รีบกดชัตเตอร์รัวๆๆ จนได้ภาพช็อตที่สามนี้มาเป็นปกหนังสือ THAILAND 180º

The Elephant Banquet, held on the next day, was somewhat chaotic. The main street was lined with long tables covered with fruit and vegetables. The elephants were gathered at the center of town for a ceremony, then the mahouts rode them down the street and allowed them to gorge on their fruit or vegetable of choice. It was interesting how some would like a certain fruit or vegetable only, and not even pause if there were none of their favorites on the table. Observing that most of them favored corn, I tried to hide some near me to coax the most handsome ones, which later proved to be a bad idea as the table is lower than waist level. Still, an adventure and a book cover shoot that I’ll never forget.
เช้าวันนึงมีการเลี้ยงอาหารช้าง อาจจะดูค่อนข้างสับสนวุ่นวายนิดหน่อย ถนนสายหลักตลอดสายถูกปิดเพื่อตั้งโต๊ะวางอาหารช้างตลอดริมทางบาทวิถีซึ่งมีทั้งผักและผลไม้นานาชนิด ช้างหลายพันเชือกทะยอยเดินทางมาจากทั่วสุรินทร์ทั้งเดินเท้ามา และบางเชือกก็ขึ้นรถสิบล้อมา เพื่อมาร่วมงานในใจกลางเมืองสุรินทร์นี้โดยเฉพาะ ควานช้างจะพาช้างเดินมาตามถนนเส้นหลักของงานและให้ช้างได้เลือกผักผลไม้เอาตามใจชอบ … ช้างเหล่านี้น่ารัก น่าเอ็นดูมากค่ะ เค้าเดินมาแบบเนิบๆ นิ่มนวล ค่อยๆ ชูงวงมาหยิบอาหารบนโต๊ะที่จัดไว้ ***น่าแปลกเหมือนกัน ที่ช้างแต่ละเชือกชอบผลไม้หรือผักแตกต่างกันไป และก็จะคอยเอางวงควานหาแต่ผักหรือผลไม้ชนิดนั้นๆ ที่ตัวเองชอบ แต่จากที่สังเกตช้างส่วนใหญ่ชอบข้าวโพดซึ่งมันมีไม่มาก คุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดจึงมองหาข้าวโพดแล้วเก็บเอามาวางไว้บนโต๊ะตรงหน้าเพื่อล่อให้มันเข้ามาใกล้แล้วจะได้ถ่ายรูป… แต่ๆๆๆ โต๊ะมันก็สูงระดับสะโพกอ่ะค่ะ แล้วถ้าเกิดมันคว้าผิดขึ้นมาล่ะ ทำไง?!?!?! .. ทั้งหมดนี่ก็เป็นเรื่องราวในการถ่ายภาพที่เราไม่มีทางลืมได้เลย
