8 Must See Temples in Bangkok, Thailand ~ 8 วัดทรงคุณค่า แห่งมหานครกรุงเทพ

Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya, and Bangkok are the provinces that have the most temples in Thailand. Each region has its own architectural style. Today we’ll explore nine impressive temples in Bangkok, voted the world’s most visited city of 2017. These are must-see temples, even if you’re ‘Not a temple Person!’ All of them show the magnificence of Thai fine arts and architecture, from the marble floors to the murals, to the stars on the ceiling. Let’s start with the temples on historical Rattanakosin Island.

1. Wat Arun aka Temple of The Dawn ~ วัดอรุณราชวราราม

I remember my first day in Thailand and my first ride down the Chao Phraya River, where I caught my first glimpse of Wat Arun or Temple of the Dawn. There it was on the west side of the river with its prangs in a quincunx design, shinning in pearly iridescence. This temple gets its name from the Hindu god Aruna, whose chariot is often depicted as the rising sun. This temple dates back to the seventeenth century, but its main prang was built early in the nineteenth century. Be sure to climb up the steps of the temple for a great view of the river and Grand Palace, as well as getting a closer look at the mosaics that encrust it.

พระปรางค์ วัดอรุณราชวราราม มีสถาปัตยกรรมที่โดดเด่นเฉพาะตัวแห่งยุครัตนโกสินทร์ อันมีที่มาจากพระปรางค์ในศาสนาพราหมณ์ฮินดูผนวกกับศรัทธาในธรรมแห่งพระพุทธศาสนาของคนไทย ก่อให้เกิดศิลปกรรมรูปแบบใหม่เป็นพระเจดีย์ทรงปรางค์ หันหน้าไปทางแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาหรือทิศตะวันออกรับแสงอรุณรุ่งนั่นเอง องค์พระปรางค์ประดับตบแต่งด้วยเครื่องกระเบื้องเคลือบมีลวดลายที่ทำสำเร็จแล้วจากประเทศจีน รวมทั้งถ้วยชามไทยและเปลือกหอยสี นำมาคัดเลือกและเรียงติดเข้าเป็นลวดลายต่างๆ อย่างงดงาม

2. Wat Kalayanamit ~ วัดกัลยาณมิตรวรมหาวิหาร

Wat Kalayanamit is also on the west side of the river which is known as the Thonburi side, not far from Wat Arun. In fact, there is a footpath that you can take to get there in about 15 minutes. This temple was built during the reign of King Rama III and contains an impressively large Buddha image called, Luang Pho Toh in the main viharn. Kalaynamit translates to “Good Friends.” and Thai Buddhists will often come to this temple and pray before embarking on a journey, asking for protection, friendly encounters, and good sales along the way. This is probably related to the fact that tradesmen from Portugal, China, and Muslim countries originally settled in the area around this temple, where to this day they still live in harmony.

วัดกัลยาณมิตรวรมหาวิหาร เป็นอีกวัดหนึ่งที่ตั้งอยู่ริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาฝั่งธนบุรี อยู่ไม่ไกลจากวัดอรุณฯ ใครชอบเดินก็เดินไปได้ค่ะ แค่ประมาณ 15 นาที หรือ 1.1 กิโลเมตรเอ๋ง! .. ถ้าไม่เดินก็นั่งรถตุ๊กตุ๊กหรือแท็กซี่ไปค่ะ … วัดกัลยาฯ สร้างขึ้นในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๓ มี “พระโต หรือ หลวงพ่อโต” พระพุทธรูปปางมารวิชัยองค์ใหญ่อยู่ภายในพระวิหารหลวง ต่อมาในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๔ ทรงพระราชทานนามใหม่ว่า “พระพุทธไตรรัตนนายก” ทั้งนี้ ชื่อของวัดมีความหมายในเรื่องการขอพรให้มีมิตรไมตรีที่ดี โดยเฉพาะเวลาจะเดินทางไปไหนมาไหนก็ตาม ซึ่งอาจจะด้วยเกี่ยวเนื่องมากชุมชนที่โดยรอบวัดมีทั้งหมู่บ้านกุฎีจีน, กุฎีฝรั่ง (โปรตุเกส) และกุฎีขาว(ชาวมุสลิม) ที่มาจากต่างแดนและอาศัยอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างสงบสุขตลอดมา

3. Wat Pho ~ วัดโพธิ์

Just across the Chao Phraya River to Tha Tien pier, plus a short walk, there is a reclining Buddha image at Wat Pho which is based on a popular story in Buddhist folklore, when the Buddha made himself appear gigantic, to humble a giant named Asurindarahu. It’s 15 meters high and 43 meters long. The large mother-of-pearl inlaid feet show the 108 auspicious characteristics of the Buddha. The compound is covered with detailed murals, and large columns support the roof. Surrounding the image are 108 small bronze bowls in which visitors drop coins for good luck and to help pay for the maintenance of the temple. The sound of the coins being dropped in the bowls makes some unique music.

วัดโพธิ์ หรือ วัดพระเชตุพนวิมลมังคลาราม   ชมความงามของพระพุทธไสยาส สร้างขึ้นในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๓ โดยเชื่อกันว่าเป็นปางโปรดอสุรินทราหู เป็นพระพุทธรูปปูนปั้นปิดทอง ลักษณะบรรทมตะแคงขวา พระบาททั้งซ้ายและขวาซ้อนเสมอกันและมีลายมงคล ๑๐๘ ประดับมุกบนฝ่าพื้นพระบาททั้งสอง ภายในวิหารพระพุทธไสยาสเหนือแนวหน้าต่างมีภาพเขียนเรื่อง มหาวงศ์ และอีกสิ่งหนึ่งที่ได้ยินตั้งแต่ยังไม่ทันได้เข้าไปในวิหาร ก็คือ เสียงเหรียญคริ๊งๆ อย่างไม่ขาดสาย อันมาจากนักท่องเที่ยวและผู้แสวงบุญเดินตักบาตรเหรียญ ๑๐๘ บาตร ซึ่งเรียงอยู่ด้านหลังองค์พระพุทธไสยาสนั่นเอง

4. Wat Phra Kaew or Temple of the Emerald Buddha ~ วัดพระแก้ว

Wat Phra Kaew, or Temple of the Emerald Buddha, which is located on the grounds of the Grand Palace in the historic center of Bangkok. It is the most sacred Buddhist temple in the Kingdom of Thailand. Inside the main building is the much treasured and respected Emerald Buddha image. The image is 26 inches tall and carved from a single piece of jade stone. There are many legends surrounding this statue that a Thai visitor or tour guide might enjoy sharing with you. The grounds around the temple and the palace are amazing showcases of Thai Buddhist art and architecture. The 178 panels of murals, depicting the Ramakien or Ramayana that is said to be the longest painting in the world. Wat Phra Kaew & the Grand Palace is a must-see landmark of Bangkok and all of Thailand!

วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม หรือ วัดพระแก้ว  วัดในพระบรมมหาราชวัง อันเป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระพุทธมหามณีรัตนปฏิมากร  ซึ่งนักท่องเที่ยวจากทั่วทุกมุมโลก ต่างพากันมาชมความงดงามของศิลปกรรมและจิตรกรรมไทย สวยงามไปหมดทุกมุมจนยากที่จะเก็บภาพความงามนี้ไว้ทั้งหมดในภาพเพียงภาพเดียว!?! .. แต่เราพยายามเก็บภาพให้ชมค่ะ (ภาพประกอบด้านบน) … มุมภายในอาณาบริเวณวัดพระแก้วตรงนี้ตามภาพประกอบด้วยปราสาทพระเทพบิดร, พระสุวรรณเจดีย์, พระอุโบสถ, พระอัษฎามหาเจดีย์ (พระปราง ๘ องค์), ยักษ์ทวารบาล, และพระระเบียง  ที่พระระเบียงนี้มีภาพจิตรกรรมจากวรรณคดีเรื่องรามเกียรติ์ จำนวนทั้งสิ้น ๑๗๘ ห้อง เรียงต่อกันยาวตลอดทั้งสี่ทิศ อันเป็นภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนังที่ยาวที่สุดในโลก
