Time Traveling at the Nai Lert Park Heritage Home ~ สวยเหลือเกินปาร์คนายเลิศ ณ ใจกลางกรุงเทพฯ
Last weekend we had an opportunity to visit the 2018 Nai Lert Flower and Garden Art Fair In the heart of Bangkok. This annual flower fair has grown bigger each year, and it was held outside at the Park of Nai Lert this year for the first time with millions of flowers on display.
By far, the highlight of our visit was meeting and photographing Khun Naphaporn “Lek” Bodiratnangkura. If you follow her on Instagram you know, she’s got a smile that can kill and a wardrobe to match. But, there’s much more to Khun Lek than meets the eye! She is a serial entrepreneur who runs her family’s real estate empire known as Nai Lert Group and is the Managing Director of Nai Lert Park Heritage Home. I was pleased when she suggested that I photograph her in front of the family heritage home and I later processed the image to show the link between the Nai Lert family past and present.
เมื่อสุดสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา ได้มีโอกาสไปชมงานดอกไม้ระดับภูมิภาคเอเชีย ณ ใจกลางกรุงเทพมหานคร นั่นก็คือ “งานดอกไม้นานาชาติ ปาร์คนายเลิศ (Nai Lert Flower & Garden Art Fair)” ซึ่งเป็นงานดอกไม้ประจำปีของปาร์คนายเลิศ และนับเป็นงานดอกไม้กลางแจ้งครั้งแรกใจกลางกรุงเทพฯ และปีนี้จัดยิ่งใหญ่กว่าทุกปี ใช้ปริมาณดอกไม้หลายล้านดอก
แต่ที่สำคัญที่สุด คือ เรารู้สึกเป็นเกียรติอย่างยิ่งที่ คุณณพาภรณ์ โพธิรัตนังกูร กรรมการผู้จัดการบริษัท สมบัติเลิศ ให้การต้อนรับและถ่ายภาพเพื่อบล็อกของ 180books.org ด้วยค่ะ คุณเล็กพาเรามาถ่ายภาพตรงสระบัว ซึ่งมุมนี้แสดงให้เห็นบ้านปาร์คนายเลิศ เรือนไม้สักอยู่เบื้องหลัง โดยคุณจอร์จ เอ็ดเวิร์ด จิอังกา ช่างภาพของเราได้ใช้เทคนิคการปรับแต่งภาพให้มีมิติไล่โทนเพื่อให้ได้กลิ่นอายของอดีตมาสู่ปัจจุบัน

Khun Lek with Nai Lert Park Heritage Home
Who would believe that in the center of Bangkok is a beautiful 103-year-old golden teakwood mansion? The Nai Lert Park Heritage Home was built in 1915 by Nai Lert Sreshthaputra, a developer, investor, and philanthropist. He was the archetypical businessman of Thailand and a proud preserver of Thai culture and traditions. King Rama VI held Nai Lert in such high esteem that he bestowed upon him the honor of “Beloved Millionaire,” Phraya Bhakdinoraseth in 1925.
ณ ใจกลางย่านธุรกิจของกรุงเทพมหานคร อย่างถนนวิทยุ หลายคนอาจนึกไม่ถึงว่าตึกสูงระฟ้าได้รายล้อมโอบอุ้มบ้านไม้สักทอง อายุ 103 ปี สร้างมาตั้งแต่ปีพ.ศ. 2458 โดยนายเลิศ เศรษฐบุตร เพื่อเป็นบ้านพักสำหรับครอบครัว ปาร์คนายเลิศได้จารึกหน้าประวัติศาสตร์สำคัญของเมืองไทยและกรุงเทพฯ ไว้มากมาย อีกทั้งยังเป็นสถานที่ที่แสดงถึงความล้ำเลิศด้านต่างๆ ของนายเลิศ ผู้ทั้งเป็นนักพัฒนา, นักลงทุน, และนักทำประโยชน์ให้แก่สังคม จนได้รับพระราชทานบรรดาศักดิ์เป็นพระยาภักดีนรเศรษฐ
Thanpuying Lursakdi’s Command Center
Eventually, Thanpuying Lursakdi, Nai Lert’s only daughter, assumed responsibility for managing the family’s business interests, using the room in the photo above as her command center. Incidentally, the sewing machine in the corner was the first ever imported to Thailand. I really enjoyed the company of Khun Rutthakit Surateerasate, CIO of Park of Nail Lert and his knack for bringing history to life as he guided us through the house. For a moment I could visualize Thanpuying Lursakdi reclining on the mawn kwan as she planned a spectacular dinner party; while Nai Lert walked his pet leopard around the park grounds.
เมื่อครั้งท่านผู้หญิงเลอศักดิ์ ได้เข้ามาสืบทอดบริหารกิจการต่างๆ ของนายเลิศ ท่านผู้หญิงเลอศักดิ์ใช้ห้องนี้เป็นห้องบัญชาการควบคุมการดำเนินงานต่างๆ ตรงมุมหนึ่งของห้องจะเห็นจักรเย็บผ้ารุ่นแรกๆ ที่นายเลิศนำเข้ามาขายในเมืองไทยให้คนไทยในสมัยนั้นได้รู้จักกัน ซึ่งถ้าให้ย้อนกลับไปในสมัยนั้นนายเลิศได้นำความล้ำสมัยมาสู่สังคมหลายอย่าง เช่น “รถเมล์ขาว” รถโดยสารประจำทางสายแรกของไทย, “เรือขาว” เรือโดยสารสายแรกที่ให้บริการในคลองแสนแสบ, “น้ำแข็งสยาม” โรงน้ำแข็งแห่งแรก เป็นต้น
Dining Room of Nai Lert Park Heritage Home
One of the aspects that impressed me most about visiting the Nai Lert Park Heritage Home was being able to see the items that the family used in their daily life in the context of their home; as opposed to seeing displays in a museum where possessions seem to lose their relevance.
The table setting in the dining room was one of my favorite exhibits. I sensed that it had played a major role in welcoming distinguished guests from around the world for a century and could imagine the aroma of fine food and the sounds of lively conversation.
เรือนไม้สักทองนี้มีหลังคาสูงโปร่งไล่ระดับให้ลมผ่านถ่ายเท จึงรู้สึกเย็นสบายตลอดทั้งวัน บนเรือนยังจัดวางข้าวของเครื่องใช้ไว้ในลักษณะที่แสดงให้เห็นไลฟ์สไตล์ของผู้อาศัยในบ้านหลังนี้ คือให้ความรู้สึกที่แตกต่างมีชีวิตชีวากว่าการจัดแสดงของพิพิธภัณฑ์อื่นทั่วไปอย่างสิ้นเชิง เช่น ห้องรับประทานอาหารนี้เคยเป็นห้องรับรองแขกเหรื่อระดับสำคัญมากมายทั้งในแวดวงสังคมไทยและแวดวงสังคมต่างประเทศ ทำให้นึกถึงภาพอาหารที่ถูกปรุงรสและจัดเรียงอย่างพิถีพิถัน ตลอดจนบรรดาแขกผู้มีเกียรติที่สนทนากันด้วยความชื่นชมและอิ่มเอม
Tradition Thai Wedding Ceremonial Accoutrements
Thanpuying Lursakdi shared her father’s love of plants and nature and the preservation of Thai culture and lifestyle as is evident here and throughout the house. Exquisite taste is reflected in this display of accoutrements that would have been used in an auspicious Thai wedding ceremony.

The Very First Flushing Toilet in Thailand
Nai Lert Phraya Bhakdinoraseth introduced many firsts to Thailand including public transportation service by bus and boat, taxis, and the first private park. He also brought the first flushing toilet to Thailand shown in the photo above. The sprawling mansion holds many other fascinating displays, but I’ll let you discover them for yourself.

Butterfly Stilt Walker
What would flowers be without butterflies? Performers on stilts were a daily treat for the flower show visitors. Towards noon, the park was full of smiling faces who took turns photographing each other in front of the numerous flower displays set-up around the grounds.

Khun Lek with the Largest Floral Carpet Ever Created in Asia
The centerpiece of this year’s flower show was a 450 Sq Meter floral carpet. This is reportedly the largest floral carpet in Asia, and I don’t doubt it. This masterpiece was made from a variety of flower petals with the cooperation of Khun Lek, BDMS Wellness Clinic, and the artist Sakchai Guy.
สำหรับไฮไลต์สำคัญของงานดอกไม้ประจำปีนี้ คือ การจัดพรมดอกไม้ผืนใหญ่บนสนามหญ้าขนาด 450 ตารางเมตร ที่ทำด้วยกลีบดอกไม้นานาชนิด โดยร่วมกับ BDMS Wellness Clinic และ คุณศักดิ์ชัย กาย ศิลปินผู้สร้างสรรค์ลานพรมกลีบดอกไม้ที่ใหญ่สุดในเอเชีย
Heart Shaped ‘Kanom Krok’
The heart-shaped Kanom Krok vendor immediately caught our eye. We both love this Thai coconut pudding with its thin rice flour crust and agreed that this chef’s version was one of the best we’ve ever tasted. In fact, there was a great selection of Thai food vendors at the fair in a scenic area near a pond. We kept circling the food zone trying to decide which dish to order before deciding on stuffed crab shells which were as delicious as they looked.
นอกจากดอกไม้แล้ว ภายในงานนี้ ได้คัดสรรร้านอาหารชื่อดังทั่วประเทศมาให้ผู้เข้าชมงานได้ลิ้มลอง ในโซน Food Market ริมน้ำใต้ร่มเงาต้นจามจุรี มีทั้งขนมครกรูปหัวใจเก๋ไก๋น่ารัก ไม่ใช่แค่น่ารักเฉยๆ นะคะ แต่รสชาติเข้มข้นกลมกล่อมหวานมันมากๆ
Thai Coconut Sticky Rice With Mango ~ Khao Niao Mamuang
Glutinous rice cooked with coconut milk and served with fresh mangos is now famous worldwide. This vendor had colored sticky rice and a variety of toppings including egg custard, dried fish flakes with fried shallots, dried shrimp with coconut flakes, and the very exotic sweet wild yam. Wait a minute; I think I recognize the VIPs in this photo. 😉
ข้าวเหนียวมะม่วงร้านนี้มีสีสันสวยงามน่ารับประทาน ใช้สีจากดอกไม้และพืชพรรณธรรมชาติตามคอนเซ็ปต์ของงาน นอกจากข้าวเหนียวมะม่วงแล้วยังมีข้าวเหนียวหน้าสังขยา, ปลาแห้ง, กุ้ง และกลอย มีลูกค้ามาต่อคิวรอลิ้มลองรสกันอย่างไม่ขาดสาย รวมทั้งลูกค้ากิตติมศักดิ์ด้วยเช่นกัน

Too bad I was on my best behavior since the cocktails on offer from The White Bus looked terrific. That Sigha beer sign didn’t escape my attention either, but I settled for a bottle of water, drawing an approving glance from Fon. The baristas seemed to be having a good time, and I couldn’t resist taking a picture of them. The White Bus is available as part of Nai Lert Group’s event catering services.

Ma Maison Restaurant serves traditional Thai food, and many of the recipes were created by Khunying Sinn, Nai Lert’s beloved wife. Diners have a choice of seating, either in a glass house or outside in a nicely landscaped garden area. The menu had a lot of our favorite Thai dishes listed, and I almost started to sit down at a nearby table. We’ll be baaack, I muttered to myself, knowing that we already had the crab cakes and dessert.

Lady L Garden Bistro
This restaurant is named after Thanpuying Lursakdi, Nai Lert’s daughter and a food connoisseur who preferred Western cuisine to Thai food. Some of her favorite dishes were Beef Wellington, Moules Mariniere, Bouillabaisse, and Lamb Shanks; all of which are prepared to the highest of standards at the Bistro today. Additionally, the menu contains the five sweetest words to my Western ears: Breakfast Is Served All Day.

Once again I am reminded how much Bangkok has to offer and how necessary it is to follow bloggers who uncover attractions that are off the beaten path. As much as I love museums, I now have a whole new appreciation for heritage home tours. Park of Nai Lert has many events throughout the year, and Nai Lert Park Heritage Home is open to the public every Thursday and Friday with guided tours at 11 AM, 2 PM, and 4 PM. They currently live in Chiang Mai where they continue to blog and are now working on a CHIANG MAI 180º book.
