180books at Thai-Indian Fun Fair 2018 ~ 180books ในงาน “ไทย-อินเดียนฟันแฟร์ 2561”
A 180° Look At The Parallels in Thai and Indian Culture
A few weeks ago we were asked to prepare an exhibit for “Thai-Indian Fun Fair 2018” to be held at Srinakharinwirot University on the 3rd February, organized by The Indian Social Club of Thailand (ISCT). We had been looking for a venue to show photos from our India 180º Photo Collection, and of course photos from our THAILAND 180º book. The theme of the exhibit crystalized into a comparison of the Indian and Thai cultures and their similarities and was called “A 180° Look At The Parallels in Thai and Indian Culture”. This was a good fit for us since we had been tweeting photos along with these lines for the past few months.
เมื่อวันเสาร์ที่ 3 กุมภาพันธ์ เราได้นำภาพถ่ายใน 180books คอลเล็คชั่น ไปร่วมงาน “ไทย-อินเดียนฟันแฟร์ 2561” ณ มหาวิทยาลัยศรีนครินทรวิโรฒ ซึ่งจัดโดย “สมาคมอินเดียแห่งประเทศไทย” เพื่อกระชับความสัมพันธ์อันดีระหว่างประเทศไทยและอินเดีย — ภายใต้ธีม “ความคล้ายคลึงทางวัฒนธรรมไทยและอินเดีย” — ซึ่งก็เห็นได้ชัดเจนกันอยู่แล้วว่าคล้ายกันมากแม้จะแตกต่างกันด้วยปัจจัยทางภูมิศาสตร์และศาสนา แต่ในความคล้ายกันนี้ก็ก่อให้เกิดความสัมพันธ์ที่แน่นแฟ้นขึ้นระหว่างประเทศอินเดียและประเทศไทย
Since I knew Fon’s background in social studies and her Thai heritage qualified her to select the photos, I concentrated on the aspects of printing the images for the show. I’ll get a bit technical here since there were several questions about this at the exhibition, so if this topic doesn’t interest you ~~~skip to the next paragraph. 😉 I’ve been using a 10-inkjet printer for everything including proofing my work for storage, which is a bit luxurious considering that the printer is designed for archival gallery printing. I’ve been experimenting with many different Fine Art as well as photo Inkjet papers and suggest that if you are serious about your work, you should do the same. In the end, I chose a Fine Art Matt Inkjet paper that I knew would give me the saturated colors that are necessary for outdoor exhibitions. Well, I didn’t pick just any matt paper I chose Hahnemühle 200 Fine Art Matt. Hahnemühle has been making fine art paper since it was founded back in 1584 and I don’t know of any higher quality paper for inkjet printing. The problem was that this paper is not available in Thailand so I had to place a rush order to New York City. The feedback from people who viewed the exhibit made it all worthwhile though. ปกติทั้งเราก็ทวีตเรื่องราวภาพถ่ายระหว่างประเทศไทยกับอินเดียอยู่แล้ว ด้วยความที่เรียนมาทางด้านสังคมวิทยาประกอบกับความสนใจส่วนตัวเกี่ยวกับประเทศอินเดีย จึงมักจะชอบคิดหาความเชื่อมโยงและความคล้ายคลึงกันของประเทศไทยและอินเดียมาโดยตลอด โดยเฉพาะเรื่องอาหาร ;-P นี่จะถนัดมาก .. บทความด้านบนที่เป็นส่วนภาษาอังกฤษ คุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดเขาเขียนเรื่องการพิมพ์ภาพถ่ายของเขา ใครสนใจก็อ่านด้านบนนะคะ .. สำหรับงานแสดงภาพถ่ายนี้ เราใช้กระดาษพิเศษ ซึ่งในประเทศไทยไม่มีขายแล้ว ถ้าจะสั่งผ่านตัวแทนจำหน่ายก็ต้องรอนำเข้าอีกประมาณสามเดือน จึงต้องสั่งมาเองโดยตรงจากนิวยอร์คเป็นการเร่งด่วนเพื่องานนี้โดยเฉพาะ คือลองกระดาษที่มีในไทยมาหลายยี่ห้อแล้ว บอกตรงๆ ว่า ถูกตังค์แต่ไม่ถูกใจเลยจริงๆ
In an age of mobile phones, Facebook, and Instagram; photo exhibits are more important than ever, if for no other reason than educating folks about what a finely crafted image is all about. Did you ever notice how blurry images appear with the low resolution of the internet? There are still many great photographers who refuse to show their work on the web for this reason. Even I was amazed at how sharp and saturated prints are compared to images in books. On a funny note, I got so caught up in the day and the event that I forgot to take any photos with my fisheye lens.
ปัจจุบัน แม้ว่าเราจะสามารถดูภาพถ่ายผ่านโซเชียลมีเดียบนสมาร์ทโฟนได้ แต่หลายครั้งหลายคราที่ไฟล์ถูกบีบและลดคุณภาพจนหมดสวยหมดเสน่ห์ รวมทั้งความสนใจและอารมณ์ความรู้สึกของผู้ชมนั้นก็แตกต่างไปจากการมาชม exhibion จัดแสดงภาพถ่ายอีกด้วย อารมณ์มันต่างกันมากระหว่างชมผ่านหน้าจอโทรศัพท์หรือไอแพดกับ exhibition ของจริง หลายท่านใช้เวลาชมภาพแต่ละภาพในงานนิทรรศการพอสมควร บางท่านสอบถามถึงกระดาษที่คุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดใช้เพราะภาพที่พิมพ์ออกมาเหมือนพ่นกำมะหยี่ ดูแล้วละมุนตาเพลินใจในการชมมากๆ
The thumbnails above are a selection of the images we exhibited. Click on any of them, and they will open up in a carousel gallery for easy viewing. Some of the similarities in the two cultures are obvious, but I was happy that Fon delved deeper into subtitles like architectural design and roles that various deities play. The circular fisheye lens has always been popular for capturing architecture, but I’m impressed at its story-telling ability as it puts a subject in a context of a surrounding that is wider than the human eye can see. คลิ๊กที่เซ็ตภาพด้านบนนี้ แล้วเลื่อนชมภาพที่เรานำไปจัดแสดงถึงความสัมพันธ์และความคล้ายคลึงกันระหว่างประเทศไทยกับอินเดีย ทั้งด้านศิลปะ, สถาปัตยกรรม และวัฒนธรรม ที่มีทั้งการผสมผสานและการกลืนกลาย ทั้งนี้ ภาพทั้งหมดอยู่ภายใต้คอนเซ็ปต์ของ 180books เหมือนเดิม คือ เป็นภาพถ่ายจากเลยส์ circular fisheye ที่แสดงให้เห็นบริบทรอบๆ ของประเด็นหลักของภาพ ซึ่งไม่มุมการมองเห็นด้วยสายมนุษย์ไม่สามารถเห็นและเก็บบริบทเหล่านี้ได้หมดในคราเดียว จึงทำให้อารมณ์ของผู้ชมเหมือนกำลังชมอยู่ ณ สถานที่นั้นด้วยขณะชมภาพในงานนิทรรศการนี้

The whole day was action packed and full of fun. There were activities on stage, contests, and a food zone full of excellent tasting Indian and Thai food. Everywhere people were chatting in two or three different languages, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company. The event really lived up to the name ‘FunFair’! Towards the end of the evening, I had the honor of meeting Associate Professor Dr.Somchai Santiwatanakul, President of Srinakharinwirot University, and presenting him with our THAILAND 180º. The smile on his face made my day! Also, it was nice seeing Fon’s professor, Associate Professor Dr.Cholvit Jearajit, Dean of Faculty of Social Science.
ช่วงค่ำหลังจากพิธีเปิดงานอย่างเป็นทางการ เรามีโอกาสต้อนรับท่านอธิการบดีมหาวิทยาลัยศรีนครินทรวิโรฒ รศ.ดร.สมชาย สันติวัฒนกุล เยี่ยมชมบูทนิทรรศการภาพถ่าย และได้มอบหนังสือ THAILAND 180º แก่ท่านด้วย ทั้งนี้ยังได้พบกับ รศ.ดร.ชลวิทย์ เจียรจิตต์ คณบดีคณะสังคมศาสตร์ อาจารย์ผู้สั่งสอนและสนับสนุนศิษย์ทุกคนเสมอมาตั้งแต่เมื่อสมัยเรียนภาควิชาสังคมวิทยา มศว.
I guess some of you are wondering why a guy from Ohio and a woman from Bangkok are dressed in Indian attire. Well, we were encouraged to do so, and there were even prizes for the best dressed, which we won. I’m still not sure what the prize is, but if it’s a Land Rover from one of the event’s key sponsors, please make it a black or white one. 😉
หลายท่านอาจแปลกใจว่าทำไมใส่ชุดแบบอินเดีย อาจจะดูขำๆ ตะลึงเซอร์ไพรส์ในความสวย (ของชุด) ก็มาร่วมงานไทย-อินเดียนฟันแฟร์ งานนี้เขาเชิญชวนให้ใส่ชุดประจำชาติแล้วถ่ายภาพคู่ส่งประกวดผ่านทางโซเชียลมีเดีย … เราคนไทยก็อยากใส่ชุดอินเดียบ้าง ชุดนี้ไม่ได้จัดเต็มนะคะ จริงๆ มีชุดจัดเต็มกว่านี้อี๊กกก 55555 … งานนี้สนุกสนานสมกับเป็นงานแฟร์จริงๆ กิจกรรมการแสดงบนเวทีอัดแน่นตลอดงาน อาหารแต่ละบูทอร่อยมากกกกก จนนึกอยากไปอินเดียจริงๆ กิจกรรมและร้านค้ารอบบริเวณก็คึกคักรื่นเริง ทุกคนมีแต่รอยยิ้ม … และสุดท้ายก็ประกาศผลผู้ชนะภาพคู่ในชุดแต่งกายประจำชาติ — เย้ !! ชนะเลิศค่ะ ..ว่าแต่รางวัลเป็นอะไร เดี๋ยวเอาไว้ไปเฉลยที่เฟสบุ้คเพจ THAILAND 180º อีกทีนะคะ.
