Filthy Rich & Lucky Ai Khai at Wat Bang Phraek— 泰国吉祥愛凱 — ไอ้ไข่ โคตรรวย แห่งวัดบางแพรก
When we learned that there was a spirit of a temple boy who grants wishes of prosperity, success, and fortune at Wat Bang Phraek, a temple in Nonthaburi, Thailand, I was intrigued. Growing up in America, I had been an Altar Boy, the Western equivalent of a temple boy, so here was a spirit I could relate to.
The name of this temple boy is Ai Khai Kotr Ruay. As it turns out, Ai Khai is a term of endearment for little boys in the south of Thailand. In addition, there are two other temple boy spirits at the temple, Ai Daeng (Red Boy) and Ai Dum (Black Boy).

เรื่องคือ เห็นข่าวไอ้ไข่เยอะแยะมากมายเยอะจนคิดว่ามันจริงเหรอ!? จนมาเจอในฟีดขึ้นว่า “ไอ้ไข่ โคตรรวย” เอ๊ะ! ทำไมอยู่นนทบุรี อยู่ไม่ไกล เดี๋ยววันเสาร์ไป แต่พอวันเสาร์ฝนตกไม่หยุด เช็คพยากรณ์อากาศเค้าก็ว่าฝนจะตกทั้งเสาร์และอาทิตย์ สัปดาห์ถัดไปก็มีนัด เลยยกมือประนมแล้วพูดว่า “ไอ้ไข่ วันนี้ฝนตก ไม่สะดวกไป เดี๋ยวพรุ่งนี้เช้าดูอีกทีนะว่ายังไง ถ้าตื่นมาแล้ว ท้องฟ้าโอเค-เคลียร์ ก็จะไปนะ”
Our Mission to Find Ai Khai Kotr Ruay Begins
It was Sunday and there weren’t many passengers on the BTS. Everyone was wearing a mask and sitting quietly in alternating seats. A short time later, we arrived at the MRT Purple Line’s, Bangplu Station. (Station CODE: PP04) From there, it was a 10-minute walk to the Bang Phraek temple. The main vilharn of Wat Bang Phraek contains the ancient Luang Por Hin Buddha image, which is 223 years old and dates back to the Ayutthaya period. It is suggested that devotees pay respect to this image first.
ฟ้ายังไม่ทันสว่าง เตียงสั่นรัวๆๆๆๆจ้า สลึมสลือ คว้ามือถือมาดู อ้าว! มือถือปิดอยู่นี่ แล้วฟ้าก็ยังมืด พลิกตัวหลับต่อ … “แต่เมื่อกี๊อ่ะ อะไรที่มาสั่นเตียงจนเราตื่นล่ะ? .. ฮื้อ นอนคนเดียว กลัวนะ ..ตั้งสตินิดนึง ค่อยๆลืมตา แล้วดูเวลา ตีสีกว่าๆ ฝนไม่ตก.. อืมม “โอเคค่า ไอ้ไข่ เข้าใจตรงกันนะ” ลุกไปอาบน้ำ แต่งตัว ชงกาแฟ โทรหาคุณเอ็ดเวิร์ดบอกว่าไปวัดบางแพรกกัน ไอ้ไข่มาปลุกละ อีกชั่วโมงนึงเจอกันที่ MRT นะ จากนั้นนั่ง MRT ไปลงสถานี “บางพลู” แล้วเดินไปถึงซอยวัดบางแพรก ประมาณ 10 นาที หากไม่อยากเดินก็นั่งแท็กซี่ ค่ารถ 40 บาท
วัดบางแพรก มีพระพุทธรูปโบราณคาดว่าเป็นสมัยอยุธยา อายุราวๆ 223 ปี ซึ่งคนย่านนี้เรียกว่า หลวงพ่อศิลาแลง หรือ หลวงพ่อหิน เราจึงเข้าไปกราบสักการะหลวงพ่อหินกันก่อน
How to Worship/Petition Ai Khai Kotr Ruay for Help
With Ai Khai Kotr Ruay’s fame for granting wishes, such as winning the lottery, business success, and recovering lost or stolen items, I wanted to know how folks went about making their requests. Right away, I noticed a table covered with things to offer Ai Khai Kotr Ruay. These offerings are given by devotees before making a wish and as a reward after the wish is granted. It seems Ai Khai Kotr Ruay likes what a lot of little boys like. That includes rooster statues, army clothes, toy guns, sunglasses, toy cars, and, most of all, Firecrackers.
By giving offerings and making a request with perhaps a promise to return after the wish is fulfilled, success is on its way. Ai Khai Kotr Ruay’s popularity has passed through the wall of China, and across the pacific ocean to America. Subsequently, countries closer to Thailand like Vietnam, Philipines, Japan are also talking about the Egg Boy. If not for Covid-19, Thailand would have international visitors drawn to Egg Boy (泰国吉祥愛凱) like a magnet.

Ai Khai Offering Tray Explained
We chose a general offering tray, and I listened to Fon and a temple helper named Arm’s instructions. First, three sticks of incense are burned. Secondly, gold leaf is applied to the idol. Next, a garland of flowers and a red soda is offered. Finally, a special block of incense is burned that will reveal a set of three numbers in its ashes.

The Lucky Number Revealed
Excitement grew as I waited for the special block of incense burn and revealed my lucky lottery number. Occasionally, my thoughts were interrupted by Ai Khai Kotr Ruay’s favorite sound of exploding firecrackers. I’m hoping that Egg Boy didn’t have the colossal migraine headache that I did on the day of our visit!
What was my number? Well, I’m not going to tell you at this time. Feel free to bookmark this blog and check back after Thailand’s October 1st lottery drawing. Souvenirs and Additional Merit Making
While currently, many tourists cannot visit Thailand due to the Covid virus, Ai Khai Kotr Ruay magical figures and amulets have been dispatched outside of the Kingdom near and far, to worship for business success, good luck, and whatever one desires.
Being a huge fan of Thai Buddhism folklore, I wasn’t about to leave without a souvenir. Kuhn Arm showed us a handsome amulet that comes as a gift with a $3 donation, as well as other attractive items. Our house is getting crowded with treasures from our travels, so the amulet was perfect. Who knows, when I return to thank Ai Khai Kotr Ruay for granting my wish, we may dedicate a special wing of a new home to him, furnished with more of his images!
In addition to honoring temple boys, the profits made from the sales of the amulets, images, and souvenirs will go towards temple expenses and education for monks and novices.
Thailand will soon be welcoming tourists again and many of them will be looking for Ai Khai amulets. Therefore, collectors will want to hurry and add these wonders to their collection before they become rare!
