Many thanks to the folks that turned out for the 2016 Chiang Mai Book Fair and stopped by The Booksmith booth to pick up a signed copy of our THAILAND 180 Collector’s Edition. My autographing hand and pen have for the most part recovered. It was also nice to meet and greet so many well-wishers. Many of the locals, especially the professors from the various universities seemed to really appreciate our book and the work that went into it. Lots of good feedback and ideas for new books in the future, too.

A few titles that are in the works
Yes to the idea of a Thai 180º cookbook, maybe even in the form of a (gasp) e-book, as well as a series of more affordable, smaller books on different regions of Thailand and surrounding countries. We’ve been working non-stop for the last four years covering Myanmar, Penang, Malaysia and the huge country of India. We officially announced plans for a CHIANG MAI 180º book later this year and received good moral support as well as input for this book. We now think of Lanna as our second home and are thrilled to live in Chiang Mai and experience the local food, culture and festivals.

CHIANG MAI 180º COVER
I know that some of you were heart-broken by the cost of our THAILAND 180º Collector’s Edition book but we cut costs in every way we could. For example, we didn’t include much text in our book, so that we could fill the book with photos. To mitigate this, we have provided a detailed blog about many of the photos which you can check out here. We strove to make our collector’s edition a world class book to show the Kingdom of Thailand as it should be, large, colorful and beautiful with the museum quality paper and smith sewing hard cover with jacket. I enjoyed watching the viewers feeling the thick glossy pages and spinning their heads to take in the wide perspective photos. The tactile aspect of a quality book is hard to describe and therefore best experienced first hand.
ด้วยความที่หนังสือ THAILAND 180º เป็นหนังสือเล่มใหญ่ หลายท่านที่ไม่ได้มาสัมผัสเล่มจริงหรือเห็นราคาและเดินผ่านไปก็จะว่าราคาแพง ส่วนท่านที่แวะมาเยี่ยมชมและได้สัมผัสหนังสือฉบับจริงๆ ตัวเป็นๆ แล้วเซอร์ไพรส์ที่ราคาถูกไปหรือเปล่าสำหรับคุณภาพกระดาษและฝีมือในการถ่ายภาพระดับเซียนขนาดนี้ น้องนักเรียนนักศึกษาหลายท่านเดินมาชมหนังสือและกล่าวชื่นชม ในขณะที่บางท่านแค่สัมผัสกระดาษเนื้อในก็ร้อง “โอ้วโห… กระดาษนุ่มเนียนมากเลยค่ะ ภาพสวยมากด้วย” พี่สองคนยิ้มแก้มปริเลย …บอกตรงๆ ว่าเราไม่ใช่นักเขียน คุณเอ็ดเป็นช่างภาพมือโปร ฝนเป็นผู้วางแผนเตรียมการเดินทางประหนึ่งว่าตัวเองเป็นทราเวลเอเจนซี่และผู้ช่วยคุณเอ็ด เราสองคนเป็นนักเดินทางแสวงหาและถ่ายทอดความงามผ่านเลนส์ circular fisheye จึงทำให้หนังสือ THAILAND 180º ฉบับ Collector’s Edition เต็มไปด้วยภาพถ่ายกว่า 450 ภาพที่ปราศจากคำบรรยายนอกจากชื่อสถานที่เพราะภาพถ่ายนั้นได้เล่าเรื่องราวของเขาผ่านภาพนั้นออกมาแล้วในเชิง photo essays และด้วยความเป็นหนังสือแนวศิลปะและภาพถ่าย (art and photography book) จึงอุกอาจสั่งพิมพ์ด้วยกระดาษ acid-free และเคลือบวานิชบนรูป เย็บเล่มแบบ smith sewing และ lay-flat binding ที่สามารถวางแนวราบเพื่อสะดวกในการอ่านได้ โดยที่สันหนังสือไม่เสียและตัวเล่มไม่ฉีกขาดแยก เรียกได้ว่าเป็นหนังสือที่มีคุณภาพสูงมาตรฐานสากลระดับ museam quality เลยทีเดียว ในขณะเดียวกันเราก็ยังเขียนบล็อก (blog) เกี่ยวกับภาพต่างๆ ไว้ในเว็บไซต์ให้ท่านได้อ่านกันที่ลิ้งค์นี้ค่ะ (insert link)

The Booksmith store really “gets it”. They love books and you can tell that when you visit their store or even a booth at a book fair. Unlike some other stores that hide expensive books behind the counter, tightly wrapped and out of reach of the customers, The Booksmith wraps their choice books in a protective cover and actually encourages you to flip through the pages and enjoy seeing and touching a fine book. We enjoyed our day with Khun Oh so much that I wouldn’t be surprised if we returned to their booth E-07 next Saturday, July 2nd to meet and greet more book lovers. This show details the origin of 180 Books, a series of art/travel books illustrated with a circular fisheye lens. By using infographics, pictures from our THAILAND 180º book, and never seen before images from our vault, we’ll demonstrate this unique lens and present our unique books.

About the Authors
Photographer George Edward Giunca, and his Thai wife, Apisatha, have traveled around Thailand armed with a circular fisheye lens to create a photo essay on the rich cultural diversity, and abundant natural beauty of the Kingdom of Thailand. Fleeing from angry water buffaloes, slapping huge mosquitoes, watching exotic festivals and religious rituals, gorging on delicious spicy food, applying aloe vera cream to sunburned skin, wading through rice paddies, getting drenched to the bone by heavy monsoon rains, and gawking at breath-taking scenery; made it a journey of epic proportions! The result is the book, THAILAND 180º. Later, they traveled extensively through Myanmar, Malaysia, and India, gathering a massive collections of 180º photos. They currently live in Chiang Mai where they continue to blog and are now working on a CHIANG MAI 180º book.
