Street Food in Penang, Malaysia, Pt. 4, Nasi Kandar

 

Penang street food is world renowned for its quality and variety.  It’s a real challenge to taste all of the island’s specialties, but a fun challenge.  Sometimes a taste for a certain dish is an “acquired” taste, as the seasonings may seem strange at first to westerners. Often I find that these strange tasting foods become one of my favorites, and I spend long hours on the internet trying to find it locally when I return home. Today, let’s look at a local favorite, Nasi Kandar.  The concierge at the hotel was glad to give some recommendations, although I could tell it made him hungry and excited just to talk about it.

Nasi Kandar is a favorite northern Malaysian dish that features a seemingly endless variety of curry-based meat and vegetable dishes, served with steamed rice.  Penang is said to have the best Nasi Kandar in the country–just ask any of the Penangites who form long queues at restaurants and food stalls!

The sheer variety of this dish means there’s always some new combination to try.  Most vendors will let you sample and offer suggestions before you commit to a full serving.
