Supine Buddha Image at Wat Phra Non
I’m very drawn towards religious artwork, so when I heard that there was a rare supine Buddha image in nearby Suphan Buri, I had to see it. There are many reclining Buddha images around the world, but in most of them, he is laying on his side, not on his back.
Unseen Thailand พระพุทธรูปนอนหงาย วัดพระนอน ต.พิหารแดง จ.สุพรรณบุรี ตั้งอยู่ติดกับแม่น้ำท่าจีน สร้างขึ้นในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ ภายในวิหารประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปปางไสยาสน์สลักจากหิน มีลักษณะแปลกกว่าที่อื่น คือ เป็นพระพุทธรูปอยู่ในลักษณะนอนหงายขนาดเท่าคนโบราณยาวประมาณ 2 เมตร … นอกจากนี้ยังมีอุทยานมัจฉาอยู่บริเวณริมน้ำหน้าวัด มีปลานานาชนิดชุกชุม ทั้งปลาสวาย ปลาตะเพียน ปลาแรด ฯลฯ ไปทำบุญแล้วก็ไปทำทานให้อาหารปลากัน
The image is in the Viharn of Wat Phra Non and is about 2 meters long. It was thickly covered with gold leaf when I photographed it and watched over by a large Buddha image, as well as a few smaller ones. The interior of the temple is very austere which gives the images even more importance and evokes a feeling of reverence.
The temple sits on the bank of the Tha Chin River and is famous for its large fish sanctuary which includes Iridescent shark (Pangasianodon hypothalamus), carp, silver barb, giant gourami, etc. Remember that even though you’ve seen the Pangasianodon hypothalamus for exorbitant prices on your Thai hotel menu, fishing is Strictly prohibited! You are allowed to buy food to feed them, which is a nice thing to do. There’s also a beautiful park attached with lot’s of shade.
